ABSTRACT
New Jersey’s subsurface tells a story of geologic complexity, industrial heritage, and, more recently, ongoing engineering challenges. The New Jersey Zinc Company’s Sterling Hill Mine in the New Jersey Highlands, which is renowned for its complex mineralogy and fluorescent displays, serves as a focal point to understanding mining in our state.

Beyond Sterling Hill’s zinc ore in the Proterozoic marble, we will investigate the history of Iron mines and the impact this industry continues to have, postmortem, on northern New Jersey. This focuses on the underground workings that are near the costly repairs and stabilization over collapsed areas on Route 80.

Through this dual lens of mining history and modern impact, we will examine how the region’s Proterozoic bedrock and mining past continue to shape present infrastructure and land use. The talk is intended to foster discussion between geologists and engineers on how legacy mines pose both educational value and continue to pose ongoing engineering challenges in 2025.

BIOGRAPHY
Mr. Mike Di Maio is a lifelong rockhound from New Jersey who has a special interest in the geology of the New Jersey Highlands. He is now a graduate student in the Department of Geology at Rutgers New Brunswick studying the geochemistry of ore deposits throughout the New Jersey Highlands. Due to that specialty expertise, Mike has been tapped to help plan the 2025 GANJ meeting that is focusing on the Sterling Hill Zinc Mine itself, and he will serve as the Field Trip Leader when GANJ visits the site in October.

Enviroprobe Service, Inc. was established in January of 1995 to provide nationwide services allowing engineers, consultants and contractors access to state of the art sampling and analysis services. Today more than ever, clients demand quick, reliable, and cost-effective results throughout their projects. Enviroprobe has committed itself to satisfy these needs by owning and operating a broad spectrum of drilling and geoprobe equipment.

Enviroprobe Service, Inc. also provides a variety of engineering and environmental geophysical services. This “mapping” is invaluable for locating utility lines and/or Underground Storage Tanks (UST’s) prior to drilling. Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) and Concrete GPR are able to show cross-sectional images of the subsurface. EM Induction, Magnetics, Gravity, Electrical Resistivity, and Seismic are some other methods which Enviroprobe uses to identify the intricacies of subsurface utilities within a drilling area.

Our services enable our clients to make informed project decisions that positively affect their budget, scheduling, and project outcomes. Our environmental technicians have significant experience relevant to a wide variety of environmental remediation projects. Enviroprobe’s equipment and experience enables us to operate with an understanding of a consultant’s needs in environmental investigations. We provide fast, efficient, and cost-effective drilling, geoprobe operations, and subsurface investigations.
