NJ POST SAME / AEG: Technical Presentation on In-Situ Thermal Remediation and PFAS Treatment

Mark Kluger from TRS Group will present In Situ Thermal Remediation and PFAS Treatment with an emphasis on geological formations. In situ thermal remediation is a robust methodology for the treatment of organic compounds. The presentation will focus on the fundamentals of electrical resistance and thermal conduction heating (TCH).  TCH can achieve sufficiently high temperatures to volatilize per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in situ from the vadose zone or ex situ from a specially designed treatment cell. The method heats the target volume from 350 to 400° Celsius, evaporates the PFAS compounds, extracts the PFAS vapors from the subsurface or ex situ cell, with subsequent treatment above ground. Laboratory studies have shown the removal of more than 99.998% of PFAS from soils, regardless of the total organic carbon levels. Significantly PFAS impacts are prevalent in the vadose zone, as the deposition of these compounds resulted largely from the use of aqueous film forming foams.
